Camp Hill, PA – The Board of Directors of the Matthew Smith Memorial Golf Tournament, Inc. is announcing the 6th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, August 22nd, at Sportsman’s Golf Course, on Linglestown Road, Harrisburg. A shotgun start is expected at 1:30pm, followed by a steak dinner, awards and prizes. The tournament attracts over 100 golfers each year.
Over these past five years "The Smitty" has raised over $57,000 for organizations that support families who have lost a parent. Last year funds were distributed to Camp Dragon Fly, Highmark Caring Place and two families who lost a parent during the past year. Contributions are also made toward the college educations of Matt’s children, Peyton, Darby and Kieffer.
Camp Dragonfly is a free summer-weekend bereavement camp for children ages 6-12 sponsored by Pinnacle Health. At the camp each child is paired with an adult “big buddy”, a specially trained volunteer who provides companionship, support, and supervision throughout the weekend. Highmark Caring Place, a Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents and Their Families, provides support to those grieving the death of their loved one.
On June 23, 2002, 38-year-old Smith passed away suddenly from heart disease. He was a co-founder and partner in the Appalachian Brewing Company of Harrisburg and a Sales Executive for Lamar Advertising. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and three young children, Peyton, Darby, and Kieffer, who have spearheaded this growing charity event for the past two years.
The Matthew Smith Memorial Golf Tournaments, Inc. was founded by friends and family of Matt to honor and remember him and to help support those organizations within the local community that provide care and counseling to grieving families. The Matthew R. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament, Inc. is organized under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions are tax deductible under section 170 of the Code.
